Dream TheaterDream Theater is an American progressive rock band that was formed in September of 1985 in New York City. It all started when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to put up a band while studying at the Berklee College of Music along with Mike Portnoy. They started out with the name Majesty for their band.

The trio then started out filling up the remaining vacant positions in their band. Kevin Moore went on to become their first keyboardist with Chris Collins taking on the vocalist duties. By 1986, the band was releasing demo tapes during their live performances in and around New York City. Their demos became popular in the progressive rock scene, with the initial 1,000 copies sold out in just six months.

In November of 1986, Collins left the group due to creative differences and was replaced by Charlie Dominici. The band slowly began to gain some exposure by playing shows around the New York area. It was during this time that the band had legal troubles with the use of the band name Majesty which led them to change their moniker. The band eventually decided on Dream Theater as suggested by Portnoy’s father.

As their live performances became popular in the New York and the neighboring states, the band caught the attention of Mechanic Records which was a division of major label MCA. The band was able to land their first record contract in 1988 and set out to release their debut album in 1989.

When Dream and Day Unite came out, it suffered from poor promotion with Mechanic not being able to fulfill most of their financial promises. Their vocalist Dominici was also fired shortly after due to creative differences. The band then went to be released from their contract with Mechanic and eventually signed with ATCO Records which was a division of Elektra Records.

Under their new label, the band released Images and Words in 1992 which introduced the band to a number of new fans with its hit, "Pull Me Under". The album went on to achieve the gold status. Other albums followed along with several personnel changes, especially for the vocalist spot.

The band is well known for its technical proficiency in playing their instruments. For this, the band has won a number of awards given out by several music instruction magazines. The band has their Images and Words in 1992 and Awake in 1994 as their two best selling albums to date. Dream Theater so far has sold over two million albums in the US as well as over eight million worldwide. They also have gone to several successful tours worldwide and are continuing to produce albums as well as go on live concerts on all parts of the globe.
