The BeatlesWho hasn’t heard of the Beatles? After all, they are probably just the best and the most important band to come out of the 1960’s. The Beatles was the band that helped define what rock and roll in the Sixties was all about. Not only were they able to put into display their artistic excellence into the limelight during these tumultous times, they were also able to achieve what few other bands before them were able to achieve- become a worldwide commercial success.

Yes, the Beatles were a major force that was behind the so-called "British Invasion", the surge into worldwide acclaim of several popular bands based in the UK that happened during the mid-1960’s. Not only were they able to influence popular music during their time, the Beatles were also able to have a great inlfuence on the popular culture. The "Mod Look" with their hairstyles, clothes and type of lifestyle were able to set the trends that became the staple during the psychedelic 60’s.

Musically, the Beatles were able to influence a growing number of listeners and made music fans out of them with their own brand of rock and roll that became the popular fare during those times. Not only that, a number of their songs were able to top the charts a number of times.

The Beatles, a trio of John Lennon, Paul MaCartney and George Harrison along with drummer Ringo Starr, took the US by storm with their talent and charm as well as their string of hits that became instant chart toppers. With songs lilke "She Loves You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "Can’t Buy Me Love", the Beatles were able to endear themselves to the American audience and in the process, became even more popular all over the world. Here are just some of what the Beatles have been able to accomplish in their revered career as the most accomplished rock and roll band during the 60’s and beyond.

The Beatles were able to show how popular they really were with the hysterical fan reaction evident during their arrival at the JFK Airport on the 7th of February 1964. It was with their guesting at the Ed Sullivan show on the 9th of February of the same yaer that further cemented their position as rock stars on a worldwide stage. A record-breaking seventy-three million viewers or about 40 percent of the U.S. population during that time were able to tune in to the first Ed Sullivan Show appearance of the band.

And during the week of April 4 on the same year, The Beatles were able to hold the top five places on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This is an incredible feat never to have been repeated yet at this time.In addition to being on top of the charts, they also had an additional seven songs at the lower rankings. This meant that at one time, about 12 percent of the music chart consisted of Beatles songs.

On the 25th of June 1967, the Beatles became the first rock and roll band to be globally transmitted on television. It was an amazing feat for a band during that time, being able to sing in front of an estimated 400 million people worldwide watching over their television sets.

The Beatles was the very first band to have appeared in a part of the first-ever worldwide TV satellite hook-up. It was on a show entitled Our World. The Beatles were transmitted live from Abbey Road Studios, and playing their new song "All You Need Is Love" which was recorded live during the show.

Even today, the Beatles remain enormously popular. In the late 90’s, the three surviving members of the Beatles, Paul, George and Ringo, came up with Anthology 1 which was a collection of their hits. It was able to sell over 450,000 copies on its first day of release. It is so far the highest sales volume of single-day sales ever for an album.

In 2000, a compilation Beatles album was released. It contained almost every number-one single released by the band from 1962 to 1970. The greatest hits collection sold over 3.6 million copies in its first week. The album sold over 12 million copies worldwide in just three weeks. It was considered as the fastest-selling album of all time and hands down, the biggest-selling album of the year 2000.

The greatest hits collection also reached number one in the United States and 33 other countries, a fitting testament to their status as the most succesful and most influential rock and roll band of all time.
