Europe BandEurope is a popular Swedish hard rock band in the 80’s that originally started out as a progressive rock band. Europe is considered as one of the most successful bands to come out from Sweden and have been able to sell over 15 million albums worldwide.

The band started out as Force which came together in 1979 in Stockholm. It was composed of vocalist and keyboardist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, Bassist Peter Olsson and drummer Tony Reno. In 1982, the band entered a Swedish rock band talent contest along with thousands of other bands from all over Sweden. Force eventually won and landed a record deal. Tempest was also awarded the prize for the Best Lead Singer in the same contest. During the course of the contest, the band was forced to change their name to Europe.

Europe then went to release their self titled debut album in 1983 that did well not only in Sweden but also in Japan. Their second album, Wings of Tomorrow was released in 1984 and got the interest of American record label CBS Records which offered them an international contract in 1985. During this time, the band added a keyboardist, Mic Michaeli to play with them on live shows. Their drummer, Tony Reno, was fired at around the same time. He was replaced by Ian Haugland.

In 1986, the band released their next album, The Final Countdown. This became their breakthrough success, selling over six million copies worldwide. The title track became number one in charts from 26 countries. The album’s ballad, "Carrie" peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in the US. This was followed by a follow up album in 1988 entitled Out of this World, which sold over two million copies. They followed up their albums with touring which included an American tour with Def Leppard and an English tour alongside Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Vixen.

Another album was released in 1990, Prisoners in Paradise but only received little media attention due to the increasing popularity of the grunge movement. After a tour that they kicked of in 1991, the band decided to go on an extended hiatus when the tour ended in 1992. Other members of the band went on to do solo projects. In 2003 the band announced that they will reunite and go on tour as well as release a new album. Start From the Dark was released in 2004 and sold over 600,000 copies. Their latest album release was Secret album which went out in 2006.
