AC/DCAC/DC is a hard rock band that was formed in Australia in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The band was also considered as one of the pioneers of heavy metal music that became wildly popular during the 70’s.

It was said that their name was developed after the young brothers saw the acronym of AC/DC on the back of a sewing machine that was owned by their sister. They took the name since they felt that AC/DC (short for alternating current/direct current) aptly symbolizes their raw energy and power driven shows.

The band went through a number of lineup changes even before the release of their debut album, High Voltage. It was on 1977 that the band was able to have a more stable lineup which was composed of Bon Scott on vocals, Angus Young on lead guitar, Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums.

It was in 1979 that this lineup was able to release their second highly successful album, Highway to Hell. But tragedy struck when their front man Bon Scott died on February 19, 1980 supposedly of over consumption of alcohol.

The band was mulling the possibility of disbanding when their front man died. But not long after, the incomplete band was able to meet up with another singer named Brain Johnson who was eventually selected and the replacement for their downed front man.

Soon after becoming a complete band again, AC/DC want on to release Back in Black, a tribute album for their fallen front man. It went on to become AC/DC’s biggest selling album to date. During the course of their career as a band, AC/DC was able to release several more albums, some enjoying relative success while some considered as major disappointments for the band.

All in all, AC/DC is considered to be one of the most successful rock bands ever to come out of Australia. They were able to sell more than 150 million copies worldwide, with more than 68 million of that coming from the US market.

Their Back in Black album has sold over 42 million copies worldwide making it the biggest selling album by any band to date. AC/DC is considered as one of the Top Ten Greatest Rock Bands by many musical experts and critics due to their influence and pioneering work in the development of the heavy metal genre in the 70’s.
