U2U2 is probably the greatest rock band ever to come out from Ireland. U2 is made up of front man Bono on vocals, The Edge on lead guitar, Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and Adam Clayton on bass guitar.

What makes U2 a great band is that they have been able to consistently remain among the most popular rock acts in the world since the mid 1980’s.

They have been able to sell approximately 50.5 million albums in the U.S. Alone. And as validation of their worldwide appeal and popularity as a band, U2 has been able to sell over 170 million albums all over the world in their long and cherished career.

Among their achievements include six #1 albums in the US, nine #1 albums in the UK and 22 Grammy Awards. U2 is considered to be one of the most successful rock bands of all time, taking their place alongside the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Their 22 Grammy awards is more than any other recording artist or band.

The start of the band began on the fateful day on 25 September 1976 when Larry Mullen, Jr., then fourteen, posted a notice on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School looking for musicians to form his new band.

Seven boys answered to the notice and attended the initial practice session in Mullen’s home kitchen. The new band was known for about a day as "The Larry Mullen Band". It featured Mullen on drums, Adam Clayton on bass guitar, Paul Hewson (Bono) on vocals, Dave Evans (The Edge) on guitar.

The Edge’s brother Dik Evans helped out with the guitar duties as well as with Mullen’s other friends, Ivan McCormick and Peter Martin completing the group. Martin only came to the first practice and never continued on with the new band while McCormick was out of the core group after a few weeks.

The Edge’s brother Dik stayed with the band until 1978. After 18 months of rehearsals, the band performed with their new name, "The Hype", at a talent show in Limerick, Ireland on March 17, 1978. The new band fortunately won the contest, earning them a cool £500 prize. They initially were a Beatles and Stones cover band while still in high school.

The band came up with their debut international album "Boy" which was released on October of 1980. It was met with critical acclaim but were not able to tear up the international charts at that time along with the follow-up album, "October". It was their album entitled "War" that turned U2 into a worldwide phenomenon in 1983.

They followed up with a string of other notable albums in the subsequent years. They released "The Unforgettable Fire" in 1984 and followed it with "The Joshua Tree" in 1987 which contained a number of their most memorable songs. It was also during this time that they began to heap a number of rock awards and selling out live concerts all over the world.

U2 really has taken the spotlight and on their way of becoming a part of rock n’ roll history. U2 has been able to come up with several chart topping albums in the decade that followed and well into the 21st Century.

Their incredible run as a band and award winning performances along with their humanitarian work have made U2 truly worthy to be called as one of the greatest rock bands ever to grace the worldwide stage.
