Nine Inch NailsNine Inch Nails, or NIN, is an American industrial rock band that hailed from Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded by Trent Reznor, the band’s vocalist and principal songwriter, in 1988.

The band officially has only member, Reznor, while other members of the band are usually composed of musicians hired by Reznor to play on live performances.

Reznor started Nine Inch Nails while working as an assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios. Reznor got permission from the studio owner to record some demos for his own songs for free during unused studio time.

Not being able to find a band that could interpret his songs as he wanted, Reznor ended up playing all the instruments himself with the exception of the drum parts.

After completing the demos and sending it, a number of them took interest and Reznor eventually signed with TVT Records. Calling his project Nine Inch Nails, Reznor came out with a debut album, Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. The album eventually spent 113 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 charts.

Not only that, the album was also considered as one of the first independently released records able to attain a platinum certification. During this time, Reznor assembled together a live band and went on tour around North America. It was followed by other tours around the world that culminated in a performance in the first Lollapalooza festival in 1991.

After releasing an EP in 1992, Nine Inch Nails then released its second full length album, The Downward Spiral in 1994. It entered the Billboard 200 charts at the second spot and then went on to become NIN’s best selling release in the US. The album contained the hits "March of the Pigs", "Closer" and "Hurt".

The album is considered by many rock magazines as one of the greatest albums of all time. The tours that accompanied the album releases also gain a growing mainstream audience for their high production value that added theatrical visual elements to the band’s live shows.

It took five years for Reznor to release the band’s third major album, The Fragile. Reznor then was battling addiction. Along with his perfectionism while making the album, it led to the prolonged production time and hence the delay.

When the album was released in September of 1999, it was surrounded by media anticipation that was brought about by previous NIN successes. This led to the album debuting at the top spot of the Billboard Charts and sold 228,000 copies in its initial week of release.

The next NIN album released was With Teeth in 2005. It was followed by a North American arena tour on the same year. The latest release of NIN is Year Zero which was released on April of 2007.
