HIM Biography

HIM was formed in Finland in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, Mikko Lindstrom and Mikko Paanen. They first gained popularity in Europe for their reinvention of the gothic rock genre. They were known for their haunting but rocking melodies mixed with lyrics that seem to be drummed up and inspired by mystical love stories.

The band first had their real taste of stardom when their second album, Razorblade Romance, was released in 1999 and became immensely popular in Germany. Fueled by the success of their single, "Join Me in Death", the album was able to sell over 500,000 copies in a span of only two months, landing the number one spot on the German Charts.

It was sometime in 2002 that the HIM album was able to reach US shores. The were able to Achieve mainstream popularity in the US as well as in the international rock music scene when professional skateboarder and MTV personality Bam Margera began using their own "heartagram" logo and also promoting their songs extensively on Margera’s MTV series, Viva La Bam. The band achieved a full breakthrough in the US in 2005 when their fifth studio album, Dark Light, was able to debut at the number 20 spot on the Billboard Top 200 Charts.

HIM Trivia

HIM stands for the band’s original name "His Infernal Majesty". The band was forced to change their name because Finnish fans had a difficult time pronouncing it. The name change was also needed because more and more fans began to associate the band with occultism and Satanism for which neither of the band members practice or follow.

HIM is the first metal band out of Finland to be Certified Gold by the RIAA, selling over 500,000 records in the US.
