Evanescence is an American alternative rock band that was formed in 1998 by vocalist Amy Lee and its former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. This goth-inspired rock band from Arkansas is known for their hard driven, emotional and rather mystifying songs that combines elements of rock, goth and classical music.

The two met in 1994 when Moody heard Lee playing the piano at a youth camp. They got together and started creating songs as a duo. Soon their songs began getting local awareness from radio stations as well as from show. Eventually they became a popular draw in their area.

Although they have recorded albums since 2000, it was their "Fallen" album that got the worldwide audience become aware of them. This album contained some of their hits such as "My Immortal" and "Bring Me to Life". The album spent 43 weeks on the Billboard Top 10 and sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.

Their song "Bring Me to Live" eventually was able to get them the Best Hard Rock Performance award at the 2004 Grammy’s. The band was also able to snatch the Best New Aretist award and also two other nominations.

Their second album, "The Open Door", was released on Oct. 3, 2006. It was quite a long span of time for releasing a second album for a band. But it was the desire of Amy Lee, the bands singer not to rush on production and maximize the creative process that took the second album quite a long time to be released.

But the careful planning paid off as the second album was able to sell 447,000 copies in the US in its first week and earned the Number 1 ranking on the Billboard 200 Album Chart.

Their music is known for their hauntingly beautiful melodies with their compelling lyrics, topped off by Amy Lee’s stunning vocals. What the band creates is a dark, ethereal mixture of classical and gothic melodies that can be so dramatic that It won’t fail to catch anyone by surprise upon first hearing them.

They are currently going into a transformation as a band and are continuing to develop their kind of music and further make their mark in the music world as one of the most popular bands to ever come out of this decade.
