Deftones is an experimental alternative rock band that hailed from Sacramento, California. The original band was formed when high school students Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, and Chino Moreno began to jam together sometime in 1988. Carpenter handled guitar, Cunningham the drums and Moreno on vocals. The trio eventually added bassist Chi Cheng to complete their lineup. They decided to call themselves Deftones.

The band began by playing on local clubs opening up for some of the more established acts on the local music scene. The band was already going through experimenting with sounds that wasn’t readily welcomed by fans that preferred metal acts. But by the early 1990’s, the band was slowly getting attention from the fans as the music scene began to be more open to experimentation.

The band also began to sell their demos on their live shows. They were eventually approached by Maverick Records in 1994 which offered them a contract. Their debut album, Adrenaline, was released sometime in 1994 and sold well through positive reviews that the album received. In 1999, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA for selling over 960,000 copies in the US.

Their next album, Around the Fur, was released on October of 1997. It, too was able to reach Gold status and was able to sell over 940,000 copies in the US. White Pony became their third album that was released on June of 2000. Owing to their previous successes and growing fan base, the album was able to debut at third spot on the US billboard Charts with sales of 177,000 on its initial week of release. The album was able to achieve Platinum status for selling over 1,200,000 copies and earned for the band the Grammy Award for the Best Metal Performance for their song "Elite".

2003 saw the band releasing their self-titled album. Fueled by their single, "Minerva", the album sold about 167,000 copies during its first week and stayed in the Billboard Top 100 Charts for nine weeks. The latest offering coming from the band was their album, Saturday Night Wrist which was released on October of 2006. It debuted on the Billboard Charts at number ten on sales of 76,000 copies on its first week.
