Coldplay is an award winning English rock band that formed in 1997 in London, England. The band started when its founding members Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland initially met at Ramsay Hall which is part of a residence building at the University College London. It took a year before they became a line-up also consisting of other university students.

The band started by playing in small club gigs under the name Starfish. In 1999, Coldplay signed up with the label Parlophone for a five-album contract and went on to record and release their debut album, Parachutes in 2000 that debuted at the top of the UK Albums Charts, initially powered by the previous release of a hit single, "Yellow". The album sold about 1.6 million copies in its first six moths of release. The album went on to enjoy success in Europe as well as in the US where it received double-platinum status and even won the Best Alternative Music Album Award at the 2002 Grammy’s.

The band went on to release other commercially successful albums that also garnered awards for Coldplay. A Rush of Blood to the Head in 2002 and X&Y in 2005 were muli-platinum albums for the band. The former earned Record of the Year Award at the 2004 Grammy’s for "Clocks". A fourth album is being planned for release in mid-2008.
