Antony and the Johnsons Biography

Anony and the Johnsons is a Mercury Prize-winning music group led by the striking, androgynous figure of singularly named performance artist Antony. Antony Hegarty moved to New York in 1990 to attend New York University, and before long had become heavily involved in the city’s punk drag scene. One theme explored in the band’s music is aspects of transgender life.

The band’s second full length album, 2005’s I Am a Bird Now, was a critical success and was given more attention in the mainstream scene, winning the Mercury Music Prize for the best album of 2005.
